Has anybody written any automatic translators for MS Excel macros?
Yes.

1. Sun have created some macro convertors. They are included in StarOffice, not OpenOffice.org. StarOffice is a commercial version of OpenOffice with extras, available from www.staroffice.com. There is an article that mentions the convertors here
http://www.crn.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=171201631&flatPage=true

2. Novell are working on a way of running Excel macros natively in OpenOffice.org. I believe some of this functionality is already available in "OpenOffice Novell Edition", which is part of SUSE Linux. I imagine this functionality will eventually become part of mainstream OpenOffice.org. One article that talks about this project is here

Hope this whets your appetite.

It is also available in Gentoo.
Here is the developers blog
http://noelpower.blogs.ie/

and the associated wiki page
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/VBA

If you have the bandwidth they can be tried by downloading and burning a
livedvd from http://www.sabayonlinux.org/ for Gentoo based
or from
http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-10.1/non-oss-dvd-iso/SUSE-Linux-10.1-GM-LiveDVD.iso
for SUSE.

If your PC supports it, these should run entirely from the DVD drive,
without affecting your current OS install.
