...Furthermore, you must download the entire program regardless of
whether you are upgrading or installing OOo for the first time.
that's the bit I was interested in - I was trying to persuade a client
to give OOo a shot, but he's unable to get broadband and so a huge
download like OOo over a dialup doesn't fill him with enthusiasm,
especially if he's got to repeat it every time a new release comes out
:-(
Hi Jeremy
One of the things that used to set StarOffice apart from OpenOffice.org
was the update feature. Sun could afford to do that, because StarOffice is
a professional product in the sense that they charge for it, so can afford
to do it.
I haven't heard whether they still allow you to download just the update,
so I had a look around the Sun site. Pages like the following lead me to
believe they still do.
http://au.sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patches/xprod-StarOffice&nav=pub-patches
Maybe someone hear can confirm that, or you could email Sun.
StarOffice costs around $70, which is much cheaper than MS Office, and is
free to educational institutions and students. I'm not sure how your
friend will feel about the cost, but it should convince him that it's a
professional product! ;-)
Hope this helps, and I hope someone can confirm whether they still provide
updates as smaller downloads.
Adrian
