No, there this is not a new method. Differently than stated in the
article the "plugin" interfaces (we call them extensions) are there for
a long time. The new thing now is that we will try to advertize this and
offer a central place to host popular extensions. There are already some
existing extensions, some are commercial, some not.

Oh, and BTW: documentation about this is available also since quite some
time. If anybody is interested in this kind of development please join
