Paul, To make this work I think you need two styles per page. One style sets the margins of the page, the other sets the paragraph to be printed outside of the left/right margin of the document.
Make the pagelayouts with the margins you would like. On the left page you could choose a left margin of 5 cm, on the right page a right margin of 5 cm. In the definition of the pagestyles you can let them follow each other by setting the 'Next Style'-option. Then make two paragraph-styles. It would be easy to name them in relation with the pagestyles. On the tab Indentation and distances (or something like that, since I use the dutch version I don't know the exact english names) set the before and after text parameters. In the above example : on the left page set before text at -4 cm and the after text at 16 cm. On the right page just put them the other way around, 16cm before text and -4cm after text. I don't know if you can make the paragraphstyle react to the underlying pagestyle.
