[users] x11 troubles

When I try to launch OpenOffice, it times out.  I think it's a X11  
problem.  When I try to launch X11 it flashed in the toolbar for a  
second, then it's gone.  I can't actually launch X11.

Have any ideas why?
Running OSX 10.4.7 on an Intel Mac.
