Of course if you try to mimic the MSO split screen behaviour and place both the windows on the same desktop all the toolbars get in the way, however the way I use the "split screen" to move text around or check two sections of the document simultaneously, having two windows is in fact great... maybe the fact that sometimes I use two monitors makes me a non-standard user, but I really don't miss the split screen.
