That's interesting. I'm using OOo on winXP and the sounds that come with the default installation are .wav files. When selecting the files to list there is a single option (the last one) that is just for searching for .wav files.
I've just successfully added .wav files to the sound gallery so it must be something in your configuration/OS that makes it not work. I'm assuming that you can add other media types to your gallery ok - if you haven't tried adding anything else - try it and report back with the results. When running impress if I right click on a theme, go to properties then under Files if I try to add a .wav file, the .wav file does not show up on the list of files that can be added in the open file dialog.
