Hi,

I would like to use Base to connect to a MySQL database on a remote
server (stored as part of my webhosting account). The client
environments are WinXP.

I have tried to read up on Base documentation, and although I have
some idea of the direction in which to proceed, I don't understand
it all.

I gather I need to set up an ODBC or JDBC connection to my remote
database.

Is one of these methods easier than the other?
(Perhaps more importantly, is one of these free-er (as in beer) than
the other?)

The WinXP Control Panel for ODBC confuses me utterly.
User DSN -> Add -> SQL Server

..which I'm not convinced is the right connector, but is the only
one that mentions SQL of any sort, doesn't seem to work. I get to
"Which SQL Server do you want to connect to?" and it presents me
with a drop-down list of machines on the local Windows network,
whereas I need to be able to enter a name of an internet-accessible
server.

For JDBC, I don't know if I have 'the necessary' installed. The JRE
1.5.0 is installed, and the Base Wizard gets as far as "3. Set up
JDBC connection", with "com.mysql.jdbc.Driver" prefilled.
However, 'Test Class' results in "The JDBC driver could not be
loaded", which suggests to me that I'm missing something necessary.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to proceed from here..

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks,

David.
