That gives you a local path that you can incorporate into a link. I did not have time to construct a link.

You may have to use the INDIRECT function.
I couldn't leave it there. You do not need the INDIRECT function:

=DDE("soffice";sFilePath &"TestB.ods";"Sheet1.A1") --> 25 (The entry in the linked cell)
The sFilePath statement is the the problem I am having. If I enter
sFilePath, I get an error.

If I enter the path to the file ./ or /tmp/test I also get an error
Hi.

If you use a Windows OS, you will need to use the formula which I labelled WinPath in my test document.

What are the errors you get?

Many thanks. One of those links was me, and until tonight, it was very
confusing what they/you meant.

Being tired, I had to force myself to look at what you wrote, and read
what you wrote.

I think I have a basic understanding on what you mean, and what the
links were meaning.
Those posts were not by me. The gentleman in question is very clever and able but tends to be way ahead of everyone else. I have to work hard to follow him.

This is the first time I've tried to apply the method.

I may have been obscure in turn. The names sFilePath and so on are pure inventions, used to give names to the cells containing those formulas - Insert >Names >Define or Ctrl+F3 (if the desktop hasn't taken that shortcut for something else) or use the NameBox.

You can then use the cell name to incorporate its contents into other formulas. The method replaces
< the path > with
< the name of a cell which contains the path >.

That cell finds the path via the document's actual location. It thus makes files portable to another location.

If it works for me, it should work for you. (Kde had stolen the keyboard shortcut, BTW.)

Good luck.
