[users] a new user

I just got a new home laptop and i've downloaded Open Office. 
 
I cant open Microsoft email attachments (Word for example) from my workplace.  
I need to work at home....can someone tell me what to do?
 
If you cant tell, I'm NOT a very sophisticated user...
