This could be made much easier, but requires someone to volunteer to do
it then propose it and get it integrated into the production line.
The following link from the download page:

contains a section on Linux RPM-based installation. This section is
slightly out-of-date, in that the distribution-specific rpm files are
now in a separate subdirectory. So the actual install steps are:
1. Unpack the downloaded image into a directory. For example,
currently, the following command would unpack into the current
directory:
2. tar xvzf OOo_2.0.4_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz
3. su to root, if necessary.
4. cd into the directory with the unpacked image. This could be RPMS.
5. Then execute:
rpm -Uvih *.rpm desktop-integration/*redhat*.rpm
(replace "redhat" with your distro name - look in
desktop-integration for the names to use - if your distro isn't
included but is derived from one that is then try that one , e.g.
use "redhat" for fedora).
Problems may arise if you don't use the RedHat Package Manager, and must
convert the packages to your preferred package manager.
If you also use a different user interface locale, then you need to also
download and install the corresponding rpms from:
http://oootranslation.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/
