Hello, I wish to use the Open Office - specifically, the program that can best be compared to MS Word. . However, I was just on the w/the manufacturer of my notebook re: another issue. Yet, your name came up. The tech rep said that he has heard that Open Office documents that are sent as attachments are subject to viruses. Further, formatting might be lost when sent.
If it makes you feel any better, I published a 240-page book using OpenOffice.org primarily. Some of the work was done in MS Word on a WinXP box and some in OOWriter on a GNU/Linux box, as I shifted between computers in two locations. I just couldn't take the GNU box with me. The only issue I ran into (I think my work was pre-2.0) was image mangling that seemed to be more an OS issue than the office suites. At some point I just quit using Word altogether in that process. I now use OOo at work, and no one really knows the difference. I have enjoyed extensive success using OpenOffice.org with MS Office, though most of the docs are fairly simple memos, presentations and spreadsheets. Nothing complex really. As for the virus issue, I am not aware of any actual exploits. Some French organization claims to have found some vulnerabilities, but I think some (or most) of these were responded to by the OOo team. My memory may be off here though. As one person has suggested, migrating to a less virus-prone OS will definitely reduce your chances of contracting a virus to almost nil. Hope this helps! Don
