Just tried it under Windows 2000 and I get what you see - empty boxes. I'm now trying various things using fontforge, but I don't know enough about font file internals to do much.

By fumbling around I've managed to get a font file that works with OOo under Windows, although I suspect all it needed was a forced regeneration of some part of the font file because I then undid the change and it still works.

I've put the new file up on my ISP-provided web space for anyone who wants it. And please let me know if I'm halucinating, i.e. it doesn't work for you.

Ross: Thanks very much, your modified font DOES work for me. I'm not at all sure what you did, but it was successful.

I'm not sure either :^)

I do have a question; I can now use this font through the menu path Insert > Special Character, so it's working and that's the important thing. But why does it only work by that path, as opposed to just typing in a letter which is supposed to give, in this font, an orienteering symbol? For example, I tried the Symbol font, and it gives its special symbols from just typing, OR from using Insert > Special Character.

Not being an expert I don't know, but please grab the version that I've just uploaded to the URL I gave earlier. I noticed that the symbols weren't appearing in the how-to-use RTF document from the original web site and, on further bumbling around realised that the glyphs appeared to be in the wrong place altogether in the original file (although there may be still some other simple reason for that but, again, I don't know). I then moved the glyphs and voila, the document shows the symbols correctly. Typing the character also works for characters upto 0x7e, but the rest are still not accessible using the ALT key method.

It may be worth checking that the symbols print before going too far with the modified font file.

Anyway, this last question is of secondary importance, I'm up and running which is the important thing. Thanks again for your help.
