Even if you don't use Gmane, you still need to subscribe with a valid
email address.
If you use an unsubscribed address to write to the list, your email may
or may not reach the list. If the moderator does allow it to reach the
list, there will be a delay.
I am aware of the problem because the OpenOffice lists do more than
publish your address. They also publish a lot of trace information
which negates reasonable safeguards you can take. I have already had
spam addressed to an originating address previously used behind an
address mask thanks to that stupidity.
My suggestion is that you use a separate email address for lists so that
incoming mail is not downloaded to your computer/s. You already have a
separate Yahoo address for gmane. You can adjust the settings for that
address so that mail to that address goes to a different Yahoo folder,
not to your inbox.
If you intend to use your email client instead of gmane, then subscribe
two addresses - one for receiving and another for sending.

Terry,
This is the point I have been trying to make, to post on the gmane forums
you have to register with gmane at "Gmane Autoauthorizer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
using a genuine e-mail address. When posting you have to use this
authorised address. This makes every contributor to this forum wide open
for their addresses to be harvested by spammers.

Incidentally, privacy.net is a real domain. Do the owners freely give
permission for its use as a fake address?
When you use gmane, you require permission from gmane to lodge messages.
Theoretically, an additonal permission is required from the list
moderator; that, as I understand it, is quite different from the authority
you require from gmane.

Harold,
I tried to post with the e-mail address [EMAIL PROTECTED] and it would not
upload and was refused with the message below:
