I installed X11 as directed, then installed the current Mac port of

What menu do you have it the top left corner? X11 or OO.o?
A possible cause is the size of the X11 window.
Activate X11 (click on it in the dock)
Chose X11>Preferences>Output and deselect Full Screen Mode
(while you're there, check if Colors is set to Millions)

I get the OO.o, File, and Edit menus, but none of them allow me to open
or create anything.
The X11 window was not set to full screen. I set color to millions, but
it made no difference.
