I don't know what we are missing or whether we are expecting too 
much. I find that switching between layout selections and 
portrait/landscape can cause the slides to switch between a 
vertical and horizontal arrangement. But I found no way to 
achieve a consistent result.

But once you have a "handout display" you can use the mouse to 
position the slides individually. Perhaps this is the intention
and the "layout" selection is only to determine the number of 
slides per page.
