OOo 2.0.2, IIRC, is what I have installed. I'm trying to use a macro written
to support another OSS project (sydi.sourceforge.net), and can't seem to
make it go.

This macro is found on the downloads page of SYDI (also here:
http://www.ooomacros.org/user.php#153173), and is called SYDI-OOo_0-1.stc.

and I can't seem to find directions on how to install/use such a file.

Can anyone give me hints?

Much appreciated,

Kurt
Kurt, there is a howto for installing macros here: http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=7995

If you look at the macros (using the editor linked to the Macros organiser), you will see that the first verse is greyed out. The second line defines the directory containing your XML files. After inserting the correct directory path, following the example given, you need to remove the apostrophe at the beginning of that line. The apostrophe has the effect of making the line comment instead of code.

HTH.
