I have just installed Open Office. I am running Windows XP

I am trying to create a database using open office base program.

This is what I do and the error message I get.

All good so far, but when I click on the Tables icon, because I
wish to create a few tables, I get this message:
"The connection to the datasource "New Database" could not be
established"

Selecting "more" yields

Error code: -1
java/sql/Savepoint

OK, an update.
I uninstalled OpenOffice, and installed the latest and greatest
Java 1.5.0_09
Reinstalled OpenOffice
Same problem.

still puzzled

Elizabeth, I do not use Base, but since no one has replied, I'll be
so bold as to suggest that you may need to register your database
as a data source before you can do whatever it is that you want to
do.

I am at a loss as to what happened. However, I do have a couple of questions. First, have you searched your hard drive for the file "New Database"? Can you find it? Secondly, have you checked to make sure that OpenOffice.org (OOo) knows where your JRE (Java Runtime Environment) is located? To do so, Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Java. This will takes a little time before it lists all of your JRE programs.
Try opening "New Database" afterwards. See if it will work now.
You might also want to look at the chapter on Base in the Getting Started Guide. It is available for download at http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors/. While at that page, browse through the other chapters available there.

Yep, there sure is a file "new database" right there where I put it.
Oh, hey! That 2nd question did the trick. OpenOffice did find all my java, but the older version (so old I am reluctant to admit the version) was the default, changed to the new one and everything is peachy.

Thanks!
