Thunderbird with lightning or calendar extension or sunbird is vary far from Outlook or Evolution if we mean personal information management and calendaring functionality. Actually there are no windows software, which can compete with Outlook or Evolution as calendaring programs, in spite Thunderbird is much better as e-mail client.
Have you considered using Evolution? It's a little slow in Windows, but seems to work well.
