I had exactly the same problem, I solved it by following the
explanation found bij Googling the subject:

Under Windows
(English), you could delete the files
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\Recovery.xcu
and
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\registry\cache\org.openoffice.Office.Recovery.dat
along with the entire contents of
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\backup\
The path names may be different under a non-English version of Windows,
and under Linux, these files will be located in a subdirectory called
.openoffice.org in your home directory.
EDIT: Deleting Recovery.xcu will reset the autosave interval back
to its default value of 15 minutes. This can be changed under Tools |
Options | Load/Save | General. |

I am a Linux user and found the same files in the same locations.
Removing them solved my problem!

I have an item that was deleted and now every time that I try to use an
open
office document, it tries to recover this deleted document and I can
not
use
my open office.
Please help! While this document recovery is in process, it locks up
my
computer and I am unable to use any open office formats.

Dear Amy
Can't you just chose to _not_ recover the deleted doc at OOo startup?
