1. In Tools>Options>Language Settings>Languages you need to ensure that your 
two versions of French are available - they should have a tick (a check mark in 
US English) and a little "abc" beside it indicating that the spell checker is 
available.

2. If you want you can select one of those languages as your default for all 
documents (you can change this for an individual document if you like).

3. In Tools>Options>Language Settings>Writing Aids you should uncheck the box 
labelled "Check in all languages". Now the spell checker will only check in one 
language.

4. If you want to write in a single l;anguage, set this as your default for the 
document as per #2. The spell checker should now check in this language as per 
#3

5. If you want to write in mixed language, you should create a paragraph style 
for each language and select it appropriately. Then the spell checker will 
check each paragraph in its own language.
