OK, by playing around I was able to get the entries numbered. You insert the short name at the beginning (in the Structure panel). If you have selected numbering then this causes numbers to show in place of the short name. The last thing to do was to cause the book titles to be in bold and I did this by clicking on the TI for title in the Sturcture panel and then selecting "strong emphasis" for character style.
