I am using OPENOFFICE.ORG 2.0 Version and I have come across a
disturbing problem bet. OPENOFFICE CALC. & MICROSOFT EXCEL.
Using EXCEL, when I enter “1 Jan 1900”, it gives me the day as SUNDAY
whereas OPENOFFICE CALC returns the day as MONDAY.
Similarly, “31 Jan 1900” with EXCEL is TUESDAY, whereas OPRENOFFICE
CALC it is WEDNESDAY.
My understanding is that this is a bug in Excel. They wrongly assumed
that 1900 was a leap year, when it wasn't. For the sake of
compatibility, they have left the error in Excel.
I agree that it is disturbing that they could get something like that
wrong.
According to Microsoft, it was deliberate. See the article I
cited in a previous note on this thread for their explanation.
The big question is: Should Calc also share the same bug for
compatibility's sake? Some would say yes. I'd probably say no.
What do you think?
Definitely no. :-)
