He's reading hisemail from his mobile, and he wants to open .doc attachments to his email. Depending upon how you receive your email, your provider may be able to reformat the doc so that you can read it. As I see that the OP uses Gmail, he should probably visit gmail.com via his phone's web browser and download the Java Gmail client. Gmail will reformat the doc so that he can read it on the mobile.
