I know I've heard of this issue before, but I just encountered a
dramatic example of a much larger (percentage-wise) pdf file size when
created from OOo than from another application.
I had a simple, one-page text document that I needed to send out to all
of the entrants in an athletic event (a trail run). On-line registration
was done using a fairly popular firm that specializes in this type of
thing. One of the options they offer it so send out an e-mail to all of
the entrants, which I decided to take advantage of to send this one-page
document to everyone, after exporting as a pdf file.
When I tried this, it wouldn't let me because they have a very low
maximum file size that they allow as an attachment (43 kb). The pdf file
was around 75 kb. I tried a couple of variations but couldn't get the
pdf file size any smaller.
Then I decided to try PDF Creator. The file size from PDF Creator was 4
kb!!! I checked and the quality was quite acceptable.
So here was an instance where a pdf from OOo is about 20 times the size
of PDF Creator. Granted, both files were relatively small by most
people's standards.
I'm wondering if others have encountered anything this dramatic, and
also what the explanation is. Also, whether any future versions of OOo
are planning on bringing down the file size of pdf exports.
