Andy,
Instead of Table/Autofit/Column width choose Table/Autofit/Distibute
Columns Evenly.

I am now having problems in Writer with adjusting cell sizes in tables, when I need to adjust several columns at a time to the same width. If I highlight all the columns I want to adjust, then go to Table/Autofit/Column width, the menu only seems to let me do one column at a time, although the advice given via the Help button refers to "selected
column(s)".
Any suggestions?
