Hello Dan - Thanks for your reply. Yes I had checked the 'Graphics & Objects' 
box, and found it was ticked OK (It must be ticked by default, as I dont 
remember ever manually setting it). There is something decidely odd about this. 
I have since checked several of my documents. Some will show graphics (not 
always wrapped accurately within the text) , others wont. but they all display 
perfectly correctly in MS Word! The first document that brought the problem up 
I have since re-scanned, and now it will display only one of the three 
illustrations in it. Could it possibly be a bug do you think?

Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org Writer > View. On the right you 
should see a Display section. Makes sure "Graphics and objects" has 
an "x" in the box in front of it.
