Download the program

During the install, you are given the option to
associate a few MS Office file types with the
OOo programs. One is the .doc format.

This should open OOo when you double-click on the
.doc file. if not, you still can start the Writer program and
then open the Word File.

Just remember to save it as a word file when you are done editing.
You even have the choice of Word 98/2000/XP and Word 95.

To be honest with you, if you really are REGUIRED to use
MS Word, there are places out there in Net-land that you
can get MS Office for a cheap price,
BUT OpenOffice.org is free and you cannot beat free.
Plus almost all of the document formatting needs for a
college environment is within OOo ability. The only real
trouble is when you need to use MS's database.

I have college degrees in 3 Computer fields and I wish
that Open Office was a round back in the 80's and 90's.

I have also asked the local college to offer OOo as a
alternative to those who do not have the money to get
the Academic version of MS's stuff

With OpenOffice, you can save your documents in MS-Office format (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access). But MS programs do not read OpenOffice documents saved in OO format. So if you download OpenOffice (<http://www.openoffice.org/>) you will be able to create or modify MS documents, but maybe you will not need them any more.

I went to purchase Ms Windows and was told by the clerk there about openoffice.org. I am attending graduate school online. I purchased a new computer but unbeknownst to me, the .doc program and Powerpoint that I have been using has been locked due to these programs being offered to me on a trial basis. I am unable to submit required documents because they have to be in .doc format and powerpoint. Can you please tell me how I would go about downloading the necessary programs to my computer from openoffice?
