I have been struggling to make use of the Conditional Formatting facility, but
as yet haven't achieved an accurate result.
I have worked, step by step, through the example, in OOo Help (which is a very
simple one) many times, but the result that occurs is pure nonsense.
I am perfectly prepared to believe I am doing something wrong, as I dont think
OO development would have reached as far as it has without a problem with this
being spotted before, but at this stage I am completely baffled!

It may help if I give you an example from one of my spreadsheets:
Condition1 Cell Value is greater than or equal to 30,000,000 Cell Style
_ThousRed
Condition2 Cell Value [ etc] 20,000,000 _ThousOrange
Condition3 Cell Value less than 10,000,000 _ThousTurq
The effect is that if the cell contains a value greater than or equal to
30,000,000, the cell style is _ThousRed; between 20,000,000 and
20,999,999, _ThousOrange; less than 10,000,000 _ThousTurq. If it's
between 10,000,000 and 19,999,999 then the underlying cell format
applies (standard font colour, bold).
Let's say, you want D1 to adopt the cell style _RedFill if A1 contains
the text "alpha". You format D1 with conditional formatting as follows:
Condition1 Formula is A1="alpha", Cell Style _RedFill
