     Perhaps you need to acquaint yourself more with all the things 
that the Styles and Formatting window will do for you. If you are 
using a paragraph style, changing it changes everything in the entire 
paragraph that has not been manually formatted already, Changing a 
character style will only change the characters that have that style. 
If you want to change just part of a line you need to use character 
styles for that.
     May I recommend you go to this web page:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/. Download the 
chapters on styles beginning with the one in the Getting Started 
Guide. They should help you use styles to do what you want done.
