Thanks for the help Harold - I usually wouldn't dream of making registry
changes but carefully followed the link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549 and it worked!
I had two different strings in
HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders.

Google came up with http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549 and 
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315352 among many others.
(I googled "error 1606 windows" without the quotes).
