When I specify "Symbol", the actual symbol displayed looks different
from both OpenSymbols and Standard Symbol L. When I do this, the symbols
show up OK in MS Word. If I use OpenSymbols or Standard Symbol L then
they don't show up in text.
It sounds like both OOo and Word are "playing games" behind the scenes,
probably for backward compatibility with pre-Unicode documents and fonts
(as someone else mentioned in this thread).
Have you tried just typing (or pasting) Unicode characters into the
formula? Maybe then Writer and Word will leave it alone.
Or are you talking about typing symbols in the running text here?
One other trick you can use is to create your formulas in another
document, then copy and paste-special as "GDI Metafile" into your draft.
Those will be graphical objects and they should be very portable. It
does make a lot more work.
There are a bunch of issues dealing with symbol problems in formulas;
this one may be yours:
WW8: brackets lost when exporting Equation formulas

If it is, it sounds like a fix(?) is imminent. You might give the most
recent 2.1 nightly build a try.
