First, I apologize for subscribing through an anonymous address. [1] I'm using OpenOffice version 2.0.3 on Windows 2000 SP4.
After considerable grief, [2] I managed to get the MailMerge functionality working reasonably. But I started to realize something rather disturbing: Changes made in the Calc spreadsheet did not propagate to the Writer database. I figured that perhaps my expectation that this should occur dynamically may have been a bit presumptuous, so I ran some more controlled tests and took care to close both programs and then re-invoke Writer. Unfortunately, it sure seems like a *copy* of the data is preserved in Writer, and I can't even figure out a way to update or modify it there. Just in case it's not clear why this is a problem, consider that I am writing a letter to a set of people which refers to several dozen fields in the Calc spreadsheet. Not only do I need to make various modifications to this data for this particular pass, the entire reason why I am doing this work is so that I can repeat the process multiple times in the future, when the data-set will have the same structure, but will contain different data. Right now, it seems that even minor changes require me to re-enter all of the dynamic field indicators to refer to a new instance of the data. I can't delete and re-import the database source, and even the "dis-connect" option still seems to maintain a copy of the old data. I've spent considerable time trying to figure this out on my own. Please help. Thank you! David Beroff (david at note.com) [1] When I attempted to subscribe from my Gmail account, the software tried to use my Sender: (Gmail) email instead of my From: email address. It also ignored mail sent from my own domain server. :-( I don't mind my "real" email address (david at note.com) distributed, but I would prefer that the Gmail address not be generally available. Yes, yes, I know that one can still look at the headers, etc.; total anonymity is far from being my goal.
