So why is the OP getting an error message?
As I said in an earlier post, the error arises when the user uses an
*array formula* (see the Help for a definition and details). If array
formulae are not used, the error does not seem to arise.
The error can also be made to go away, as someone else pointed out, by
using ISNUMBER. This works with array formulae as well as with
"ordinary" formulae.
Array formulae and "ordinary" formulae treat non-numeric values
differently in Calc. I think this may be a bug in Calc's implementation
of array formulae. The convention, ever since I started using
computerised spreadsheets in about 1975, is that non numeric values are
treated as zero in arithmetic contexts. Calc supports this convention in
"ordinary" formulae but not in array formulae.
Am I going to raise an issue? No.
