I thought that I was supposed to download the MD5 calulator program. I am
still unsure where that is downloaded from. I understood that when I had
downloaded this it would establish whether my download was the correct one
or not.

Sorry but I am really confused by your message. I gave you three links:
1. The first is http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.4/md5sums.html
This gives the correct MD5 sum for a longish list of different files, which
it names. You need to identify the name of the file you downloaded and,
after running the MD5 calulator program, compare its result to the sum given
for your file in that list. You find how to run the calculator by
clicking "Instructions
for using md5sums" within the same page and scrolling down till you find the
instructions for Windows.
2. The second link I gave you was the "correct" place from which to dowload
the English version of OOo. It is
http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.4/index.html.
3. The third link I gave you was for downloading non-US versions of OOo.
It is http://projects.openoffice.org/native-lang.html
I have no idea where the links you mention came from but I certainly never
gave them to you.

Thanks for your email but I am sorry to say that the instructions
are beyond me. I followed the link and Firefox browser instructions
only to find that the Firefox extension does not work for Firefox
2.0. When I clicked on the link to download 'OpenOffice.org archive

First you need to check if the file you downloaded is corrupt. Go
to http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.4/md5sums.html and click
"Instructions for using md5sums". This will direct you to download
and run a program that will calculate an alphanumeric value based
on your downloaded OpenOffice file. Compare the result to the
value for *your* file in the list on the page I just mentioned. If
they are equal then your download file is OK. If not, then the
file is corrupt and you should try again - don't forget to check
the new file also ;-)
Where did you get the download? For English it should have come
from http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.4/index.html. Otherwise
from the relevant page linked to from
http://projects.openoffice.org/native-lang.html.
If the file is OK, try disconnecting from the internet and then
(and only then) deactivating your antivirus (AV) and firewall
software before trying the installation again. AV software
particularly often interferes with program installation, not just
for OOo. Don't reconnect to the net till both AV and firewall are
running properly.
If none of the above works, come back here with details.

Sorry but I don't understand. Ignore the Firefox stuff. You have a
problem with *OpenOffice* under *Windows*. Please click the Windows
link to read how to verify the MD5 sum under Windows for the file you
downloaded. The instructions tell you how to download a Windows
program or a DOS (CMD) program to check the file. The MD5 checker
program reads a file (in this case the OpenOffice download file) and
does a mathematical calculation on its contents. It displays the
result. You compare the result it displays with the correct result as
displayed on the OpenOffice web page I told you about. If they are
not the same then the download file is corrupt. If they are the same
it isn't. If you can install and use Firefox (as you obviously can)
then this can't be beyond you.
