I've been running OO.o on Windows XP for a few years with no problem.
I just downloaded the 2.1.0 upgrade and tried to install it, but
after the "Verifying install" phase it gives me an error:

"Some files that need to be updated are currently in use. The
following applications are using files that need to be updated by this
setup. Close these applications and click Retry to continue:

AbiWord
iTunes
Mozilla Firefox
PC-Pine
PuTTY
Windows Task Manager"

Those are all the applications that are in the taskbar. If I reboot
and try installing with no other open applications, it gives me the
same error but the list of applications is empty.
Two suggestions.
First, make sure Quickstarter is not running when you install the new version. If Quickstarter is running there will be an icon in the System Tray. It's grey with a picture of three flying birds. Right click it and choose "Exit".

If that fails, or if Quickstarter wasn't running in the first place, disconnect your computer from the internet and then disable your Antivirus (AV) and firewall software before doing the install. Re-enable AV and firewall *before* re-connecting to the net. Please don't have your machine connected to the net unless both AV and firewall are running properly.
