Can you try the following:

>From the Finder, locate the X11 application and try to run it.  If you get the 
>top bar, can you attempt to open the terminal program from the Applications 
>item?

If Xterm starts, type in the following:

/Applications/OpenOffice.org\ 2.1.app/Contents/MacOS/program/soffice &

And press the Return/enter key.

This should start OpenOffice.org and give the Writer screen.

If it does not, note any errors encountered.

If Xterm does not start or X11 does not start, it may be time to reinstall X11.
