I know this one is really absurd but...

I have installed Open Office 2.1. I previously had 2.0.4.

This is linux so don't anybody jump in with a windows answer here.

I'm running debian (testing) which doesn't normally use rpm so I used
alien to transfer the rpms to deb packages. Then I used "dpkg -i *.deb"
to install the packages.

All seems fine in that a directory called /opt/openoffice.org2.1
appeared as expected.

The problem is I can't start open office 2.1

The installer ate my Gnome menu links and didn't replace them with new
ones.

I have tried everything I can think of in the terminal... including
ooffice, soffice, swriter, ooffice2.1, openoffice, openoffice2.1

The best I can get from anything is to start 2.0.4

I have also tried running the executable scripts in the programs
sub-directory.

I have checked the md5sum and it is correct. There didn't appear to be
any problems in the output from either alien or dpkg.
Any ideas?

You may have come up against the link problem mentioned here:

http://qa.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=7315

Your old links may not have been replaced.
