     What might help is the "Working with Master Documents" chapter in 
the Writer Guide. It can be downloaded from 
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/.
     You may need to also get the "Working with Styles" chapter of the 
Writer Guide. It describes how to use styles for numbering pages.
