You are on the right track Meg. Make sure OOo is closed, including
quickstarter in the taskbar tray, then rename the folder "Documents and
Settings\Application Data\OpenOffice.org2".

I would suggest something like:
"Documents and Settings\Application Data\xOpenOffice.xxx".
This will enable you to restore things later if necessary.

Start OOo (say Writer) and you should see the first time use dialogues.
Step through these as you please, then open an existing document that
has been causing you problems and see if the issue has been resolved.

Obliviously, you will not have retained any of your previously
personalised preferences, but it should not be a major problem to
reconfigure them.

If the problem has been resolved you can then delete the previously
renamed folder.
