Thanks guys, I had forgotten to install the lates version at home. When I installed 2.1 I tried adding a few words. Then I restarted the PC and opened the document again. It worked. The spellcheck recognized them.

Exit it before trying to update the dictionary, then, after you have added the word(s), quit OpenOffice completely. I *think* that now, when you restart OOo the word(s) will be remembered.
