I had forgotten to install the lates version at home. When I installed
2.1 I tried adding a few words. Then I restarted the PC and opened the
document again. It worked. The spellcheck recognized them.

I seem to remember this has something to do with the Quickstarter. Exit
it before trying to update the dictionary, then, after you have added
the word(s), quit OpenOffice completely. I *think* that now, when you
restart OOo the word(s) will be remembered.
