Ensure, in the "Save as.." dialog box, that the "Automatic file name

If you now have existing files without an extension, then you can rename 
them in Windows Explorer (add .odt (Writer) or .ods (Calc) if they have been 
saved in the OOo format).

If you attached a file to your e-mail it has been stripped out by the 
mailing list, as attachments are not accepted.
