Hi Harold,
I'm using Windows XP and OOo version 2.1.0
I'm afraid I don't know much about networks so you'll have to tell me
what specifically you need to know and where to find it although I
use an ethernet connection through a router to connect to cable
broadband.
As for clicking "yes" to continue, I don't particularly want to since
I don't know what it will do.

What version of what Operating System are you using? Which version of
OpenOffice? Please go to Help>About and tell us the version number
*below*
the headline.
What happens if you say "yes" when it asks if you want to continue?
Is your computer linked into a private or company network? If so,
please
describe the configuration.

Hello,
When I try to use OOo I get the following message:
"Either another instance of Openoffice.org is accessing your personal
settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access
can lead to inconsistancies in your personal settings. Before
continuing you should make sure user 'closes Openoffice.org on host'.
Do you want to continue?"
I click "no" but I don't know how to 'close OOo on host'.
Can you help?
Thanks,
Mark
What else, if anything, is connected to your router? Is there another
computer?
When you installed OpenOffice did you install it only for you or for "all
users"? And are you logged into Windows as the same user as when you
installed it?
Do you have any other version(s) of OpenOffice installed?
You could try quitting all OpenOffice programs and renaming the file
"C:\Documents and Settings\Harold\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\setup.xcu" before
starting OpenOffice. That file should get re-created. Before renaming the
file, make sure the Quickstarter isn't running - look in the System Tray; if
there's a grey icon with flying birds pictured, *right* click on it and
choose Exit; if there's no icon then the Quickstarter isn't running so
you're OK.
Let us know how you get on.
