Nothing to panic about.  It seems that your professors use other application
on their computers.  In this case, OpenOffice allows you to save in the same
format of the applications your professors use.  

Go to <File> menu and click <Save As>.  In the <Save As> pop-up window, look
for the format you want to save in the choice <Save as type:>
