James,
I take the same steps in order to install a British thesaurus when I upgrade my installation. What I also do is check the new dictionary list before I over copy it with the old to make sure they are both in the same format. I noted that before OOo2.0 came out the US thesaurus was updated to version 2 and was designated as such in the ooo directory. So I would say just have a quick look at the contents of the new ooo directory before copying anything into it. This then gives you the chance to make any changes to the old list file that may be necessary before copying.

Whenever I upgrade to the latest version of OOo I install the Australian Dictionary. In the interests of doing this quickly, and because I have added many words to my Australian Dictionary over the years and do not want to start off with a fresh copy, this is the way I do it (in Windows XP) ...

Once the new version of OOo is installed, I copy my existing dictionary list file and the three *.au files into the ... /share/dict/ooo folder, answering "yes" when it asks if I want to over-write the dictionary.lst file.

I then fire up OOo and go into Tools/Options/Language settings, to set my spell checker and locale to "Australian"

MY QUESTION
Is this the best way to do it?

I am always concerned that one day a new version of dictionary.lst, or other files in the ooo folder, will change and I will be copying old files over new formats.

A little worry only, but I would appreciate your comments.

Many thanks, James
