Hi,
the problem is that when I start OpenOffice it connects to some remote
host which slows the process down. I've noticed it when my Internet
provider had problems with its DNS server. The startup just went on
forever. When I switched off the network connection it was back to
normal. I have only figured out that OO wanted to connect to my DNS
server but that's it.

Can you tell me how to prevent OO from connecting SOMEWHER on startup?

My installation is a Gentoo Linux compilation (version 2.1, kernel
2.6.18) with the following USE flags:
branding cairo cups dbus firefox gnome gstreamer gtk kde sound
-binfilter -debug -eds -ldap -odk -pam -webdav -java

I would appreciate Your answer
