Open the HTML file in OOo. Use Control+a to select the entire
file. Use Control+c to copy it. Open a new text file in OOo (File >
New > Text Document). Use Control+v to paste the contents to the new
file. Save this file as an *.odt.
Are you sure you backup files are in HTML and not XML? (Just a
thought.)
