I assume you want to spell check your documents from an
Australian dictionary. File > Wizard > Install new dictionaries will
allow you to download the Australian dictionary. (You will need JRE
to do this. JRE: Java Runtime Environment available from
www.java.com.)
Open a document you want to spell check. Click any word.
Format > Character. Click the Font tab. In the middle of the window is
the Language dropdown list. It probably has English (??), but the ??
is not Australia. It might even be USA. At this point, you can click
this dropdown list to see if English(Australia) is listed with an abc
and tick (checkmark) in front of it. If it does, you do not have to
download the dictionary. If it does not, you will.
You will want to create a template which uses Australian English
and then set it as your default template. Detailed instructions on
how to do that is found in the Templates chapter of the Writer Guide
found at http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/.

To use Impress (OOo's presentation application; PowerPoint is as
a presentation application), use File > New > Presentation. To use
Calc (OOo's spreadsheet application which is what Excel is also), use
File > New > Spreadsheet.
