What about using a keypair or x.509 certificate to encrypt documents?
You only need to remember the passphrase for the key/cert, and your
documents are secured.

Because (a) you need a mechanism to circulate or make available your public
key to your readers and (b) you need readers who are savvy enough to know
how to obtain it, how to install it, how to obtain the relevant software,
how to install that and on and on and on. Normally it's (b) that is the
stopper although (a) isn't easy. Unless, of course, you are your only reader
;-)
