I am sorry for replying without actually knowing the answer, but you do know that OpenOffice.org i an open source project? That means that you can download the source code and have a look for yourselves... but I guess it might not be obvious where to start looking...
Of course it's a lot easier if someone already know the answer and replies. I just wanted to point out the possibility, just in case no one replies... I would actually also want to know about the OpenOffice.org sort algoritm. Would also be nice to know if MS Office use the same, but I guess that's quite a bit harder to find out...
